News of the Day: Education Department announces early FAFSA launch
On September 23, 2026, the U.S. Department of Education announced what it described as the earliest launch of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid in the program’s history. Families should use the official federal site for application details and deadlines rather than relying on social-media summaries. Read the Department’s dated announcement
Article of the Day: Teach students to name the evidence move
“Use evidence” becomes more teachable when students can name what the evidence is doing. A detail might define a term, reveal a pattern, show a contrast, establish a cause, or illustrate a change. Naming the move helps learners select evidence with purpose rather than copying the first sentence that looks relevant.
Model with one short passage: state a claim, underline one detail, and finish the sentence “This matters because…” Then ask students to label the relationship between claim and detail. The label does not replace reasoning; it gives students a starting structure for that reasoning.
During independent work, accept aligned ways of showing the connection: a written explanation, oral response, annotated diagram, sentence frame, or assistive-technology response. Keep required accommodations in place and judge the same evidence-to-claim reasoning across formats.
Teacher Advice: Label the relationship before explaining it
Before students write a full explanation, ask them to label the evidence move: detail, pattern, contrast, cause, change, or quotation. Then prompt, “How does that move support your claim?” The two-step routine makes reasoning visible and easier to coach.
Parent Advice: Ask, “What made you think that?”
After your child shares an answer, ask what in the text, picture, problem, or experience led to it. Let them point, read aloud, draw, type, or use their usual communication support. Focus on the connection between the clue and the idea, not on producing a long response.
