How this resource helps

ABOUT THIS RESOURCE Theme Detectives: Evidence in Original Fiction is a complete, standards-aligned reading worksheet designed for Grade 5 students working on NC RL.5.2 and CCSS RL.5.2. Every element of this resource is built to save teacher prep time while delivering a rigorous, high-quality student experience. WHAT STUDENTS WILL DO Students begin with a 10-word Vocabulary Pre-Teach matching activity to build background knowledge before reading. They then read an original fiction passage, The Empty Garden (Lexile 760L, ~8 min), and respond to 10 scaffolded comprehension questions progressing from DOK 1 (recall) through DOK 3 (extended thinking). The worksheet closes with a Student Self-Check Checklist so students can review their own work before submitting. SKILL PROGRESSION Guided (DOK 12): Students answer recall and skill-level questions with teacher support. Independent (DOK 2): Students apply the standard independently, including writing a theme statement with three evidence pieces. Extended (DOK 3): Students write an objective summary, make a personal text connection, and analyze literary techniques that develop the theme.
